Joanne Coster (Chair Elect)

I have an undergraduate degree in Social Science and a Masters degree in Health Services Research. I have been based at the School of Health and Related Research (ScHARR), University of Sheffield since 2003, firstly as part of the Section of Public Health and since 2007 as part of the Medical Care Research Unit. I was part of a research team that developed methodologies for and evaluated quality and safety of patient care through case note review and I have also evaluated urgent and emergency care related policy initiatives for the Department of Health. I am currently working on a 5 year NIHR Research Programme to develop new ways of measuring the quality of ambulance service care. I am also undertaking a PhD which is linked to the NIHR Research Programme.

I have a background in social science and since 2004 I have worked on a number of research projects related to child public health and health inequalities at the UCL Institute of Child Health. In March 2011 I completed a PhD which aimed to explore how policies in the early years might influence health inequalities. I am now working on two projects under the Department of Health Policy Research Unit for the Health of Children, Young People and Families (within the UCL Institute of Child Health), exploring the relationship between family structure and child health, and the potential of cross country comparisons for policy development and evaluation

Taking a leave of absence from the NHS Public Health Training Scheme, I currently hold an NIHR Doctoral Fellowship at UCL in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health. My personal research focuses on gender differences in the development, treatment and outcomes of specific coronary disease phenotypes, using electronic patient records. Collaborative work within the Clinical Epidemiology Group includes investigating hospital variation in outcome following admission for acute coronary syndrome and developing the use of CALIBER linked datasets.
