What is RSS?

The purpose of RSS is to give you a very quick way of finding out if anything new has been posted on a web site, without having to open the web site itself and work out what you have not already seen. RSS stands for, among other things, Really Simple Syndication.

Different browsers handle the RSS "feed" in different ways, but they all require you to "subscribe" to the feed.  Subscription does not require you to send the website your name or any other information, but is the term for connecting your browser to the feed.

To get the most from the SSM website, we recommend that you use our RSS feed

Current browsers:

In Internet Explorer 7 and later a link similar to a Favorites link is placed in the Feeds section of the Favorites Center.  Click the Feeds button to see all the feeds available to you.  Click on Latest SSM News to see what has been posted most recently on our site.  NOTE: Internet Explorer 6 or earlier will NOT display RSS feeds in this way.

In Firefox 3, subscription sets up a link in your Bookmarks list with the name Latest SSM News. When you click on the bookmark a dropdown list appears with titles for the news items.

In Opera 9, the first time you subscribe to a feed, Feeds will be added to Opera's main menu, and a "Feeds" heading will appear in your Mail panel if you have set up one or more e-mail or news accounts.

The list is usually refreshed once a day, according to how your browser is set up. You can refresh it manually by right clicking and clicking Refresh or Reload.  If you don't like the feed system, you can always delete it from your browser.

Older browsers

Older browsers do not display RSS feeds so you need a separate program to do this.  There is an article on the Microsoft website which gives some suggestions about how to view feeds.

We have tried Feedreader 3.14 and found it easy to set up and use.  However, don't neglect to read the instructions!  To link to the SSM feed, click on the New button and enter the URL of the SSM feed in the Add Feed input box. This is: http://www.socsocmed.org.uk/ssmrss.xml  (for the IEA-EEF feed it is http://www.dundee.ac.uk/iea/IEAEurorss.xml)
