The objective of the Society is to advance knowledge for population health.

The term “social medicine” covers a very broad range of subjects including health, public health, health policy, disease prevention, epidemiology, sociology, psychology, economics, medicine, the medical and health needs of society, healthcare and health services.

Membership of the Society is open to anyone whose work is consistent with this objective. See our membership benefits page for more details on what membership includes.

For an application to join the Society, we require evidence of eligibility, consisting usually of endorsement by a current member, or a referee, confirming accounts of relevant research/teaching/work or position held. Applications for membership are considered by the Honorary Treasurer and subsequently confirmed at a Committee meeting.

Membership Prices

The membership annual subscription is currently:

  • £45 for ECRs
  • £60 for non-ECRs.

Subscription rates apply to a calendar year and are due annually on 1st January.

New membership starting after the September Annual Conference would constitute membership for the rest of that year plus the whole of the following year.
